Follow Me: Experience the Loving Leadership of Jesus
Published in Paperback by Navpress (October, 1996)
Authors: Jan David Hettinga and Dallas Willard
Average review score:

Compelling
Hettinga offers a compelling perspective on what it truly means to be a follower of Christ. He raises the problem with the evangelical gospel presentation and then redeigns it within the context of the Biblical concept of the "kingdom of God." Though sometimes bordering Lordship salvation, I think he is correct in reinserting the reign of Christ in the gospel presentation. When a person comes to Christ, he is giving up the reins. I recommend this book for any Christian who seriously wants to follow Jesus Christ in the biblical sense.

INCREDIBLE
What a fantastic insight to the Christian path! It is such an incredible blessing to have the most powerful and important relationship of our life explained in a "simpler" point of view. This book has made a dramatic impact on my personal relationship with Jesus Christ.

Follow Me is Commitment
Jan Hettinga gave me a copy of this book in 1996 but I didn't read it until 2000. Since then I have not stopped recommending it to my Christian friends. Its message of genuine commitment of servant to Master is desperately needed in our world today. I have purchased over 30 copies to give or sell to people whom I have urged to read it. It is a life-changing book for anyone who wants to get serious about living for Christ.

It is absolootey the best in the wurld. YA! I go to highschool and I is gettin the beest education that this here town can offer. bi guyz

An excellent piece of work, clearly done as a labor of love
I moved to Los Gatos in 1996. Before I read this book I had virtually no idea of the town I lived in. Now I understand it very well. It's actually interesting! By the way, this book was obviously created as a labor of love by someone with a genuine interest in their community.

Los Gatos Observed
This book displays a wonderfully compiled history of Los Gatos. The photography is beautiful, and just about every fact is historically accurate. A good section of the book is where the buildings are shown today downtown, and then their original use is displayed below the photo. Anywone who lives in Los Gatos or anywone who loves Santa Clara County history will love this book!

Trouble for Trumpets

Wan't to know how well this book is? Read on!
For 3rd grade, I brought this book for show and tell. My classmates were ooed and awweed by the amazing details and pictures that were included on every page. The puzzles that were hidden within the binding and other areas of this wonderful book brought my imagination to life. I'm well too old to be reading books like this anymore. But I sure wish I could buy this book once again and put it on my shelves. Along with two other favorites...."Anamalia" and the "11th Hour" these books are definetely classics.

Great. The best I have ever read. Must read!!!!!!!!!! :-)
I think that I will always enjoy this book and I really like it. I'm tweleve and I liked it the first time I read it. I think that this book should get some kind of reward. Like well..."The Best Book Of The Century". I think that everyone should read it. I think that little kids would really like it. I know that I did when I was alittle kid. I liked how the illistrater made such cool pictures.I mean that the pictures where really detailed. William Kenny

This one my first and favourite fantasy book.
I grew up reading this book, the illustrations are wonderful and are so detailed. The best pictures are at the beginning of the book, with a map of the area, which details the cold winter land to the north and the warm summer land of the trumpets to the south. The pictures use real wildlife and down the side of each page their is a numbered key, which relates to the specific item on the picture. Such as Ladybirds, Robins and Blackberries. The story is marvellous, as the trumpets hibernate through the winter, and have to take a underground train to their lair. But trouble is in store for them when the enemies of the north advance. But with the help of the animals, the trumpets save the day.

False Positive
Published in Paperback by Waterbrook Press (16 July, 2002)
Authors: William Cutrer, William Cutrer, and Sandra Glahn
Average review score:

False Positive--a Medical Thriller that makes you think
I couldn't put False Positive down. The authors really have a knack for clear, page-turning writing. Characterization was great, and I appreciated the humanness of the characters as well as the real struggles that people face in the abortion arena. It was dealt with sensitively, and with candor and reality.

Real People and Real Situations
A morality play...disguised as a medical mystery...with the requisite dash of romance? Hmm, was this worth my time?

Although I believe in the sanctity of life, the subject matter of this book almost kept me from reading it. I feared a thinly veiled anti-abortion discourse--and one thing I don't handle well is agenda-heavy fiction. If you want to make a point, make sure to entertain and tell a good story at the same time. That's why Grisham's legal thrillers continue to sell even while taking on the tobacco industry, the homeless crisis, etc.

Cutrer and Glahn dispelled my fears quickly. The medical details, the unflinching looks at difficult subjects, and the likeable characters drew me in. ...

Although "False Positive" doesn't have the immediate hook of a Grisham-type thriller, it does have the very human motivations, readable dialogue, and ethical dilemmas that Grisham has used to such marvelous effect. The authors handle this medical mystery with maturity, surprises, and grace. As the story draws a growing number of characters together, the action accelerates and the emotional impact rises. While never veering from their spiritual beliefs, the authors (and publisher) demonstrate open minds and open hearts. Beware: stanch advocates of either side of the abortion debate will cry foul, but this book rises above the mudslinging. Cutrer and Glahn raise questions not easily answered by either side. They write about real people who don't always agree. And I liked that.

In fact, I liked this book. A lot! Although "False Positive" was my first read by these authors, it will not be my last.

Tender approach to an explosive subject
False Positive is a fast-paced novel that handles the volatile subject of abortion in a tender and compassionate way. So often the debate between the pro-life and pro-choice camps deteriorate into name calling and vicious attacks. This book does NOT do that, but gently probes the deep questions without bogging down in theory or theology. The characters in the book present a variety of views and circumstances drawn from the real world are incorporated. (One of the authors is an OB-BYN physician.)

The characters are real and it should be required reading for those who have strong opinions on either side of the abortion question. All but the staunchest defenders of abortion, under ANY circumstances, will find this book worthwhile. This book is especially timely for women contemplating abortion as well as comforting to those who may struggle after having an abortion.

The heroes of the book (and the real world) are the tireless volunteers who give of themselves to help women facing unwanted pregnancies. Thumbs up to the authors.

The Spirit of the Disciplines - Reissue : Understanding How God Changes Lives
Published in Paperback by Harper SanFrancisco (September, 1999)
Author: Dallas Willard
Average review score:

An unparalleled look at an underspoken topic
Dallas Willard's examination of the disciplines of the Christian life is an unparalleled book on the subject. I have never read its equal. In Christianity today, there is so much emphasis on a quick conversion and the love and mercy of God, but rarely does a teacher speak on the difficult topic of the strain and pain and longevity of the daily walk with Christ. The disciplines of a Christian are similar to the disciplines of one running a marathon, the Apostle Paul teaches, and Dallas Willard has taken a careful examination of these disciplines. He declares that Christianity can only be a relevant guide for modern humanity if it takes the need for human transformation through the Holy Spirit seriously, and clarify and exemplify realistic methods of this transformation by modeling it ourselves as Christians. Willard goes into great detail concerning the disciplines as the method by which Christians model the work of the Spirit in their lives. He declares that they are the very nature of life itself for Christians and that only by consistently teaching and practicing them will Christ's church be the force required for true spiritual change in today's society. A masterful work, this book should be in the library of any Christian that seeks to truly live the life of Christ and be a light in the world today.

A Classic Work on the Subject of Spiritual Formation
Dallas Willard has written a compelling argument for a revival of the spiritual disciplines. It's a book that goes beyond "what would Jesus do" into the deeper question of "how would Jesus live." Willard argues that for us to live the life of Jesus "under pressure" we must adopt his overall lifestyle, which was punctuated by the spiritual disciplines. Though individual disciplines are examined, "The Spirit of the Disciplines" isn't primarily a book about "how to" practice the disciplines but "why to" make them a central part of your life. It is challenging, thought provoking, and potentially life changing.

Out of the Madness: From the Projects to a Life of Hope
Published in Hardcover by Warner Books (July, 1994)
Author: Jerrold Ladd
Average review score:

WINNING IN AMERICA - AGAINST ALL ODDS
Excellent writing from a motivated and dedicated young man. Jerrold Ladd experienced disrupted education, a lack of early age positive male influence while proving first hand, that you can over come all obstacles and succeed in America.

It is a gut wrenching look into living in America's projects shortly after desegregation. It reminded me of the fact that life in America is not and has never been the same for everyone. For many, it is a living torture. Once you have read Out Of The Madness, you feel like you personally know the author. The author, Jerrold Ladd, tells an in-depth story about his life, his family (Mother, sister and brother) and some of his friends and associates. He provides an incredible amount of detail for a relatively short book (under 200 pages and large print). He allowed me to walk in his foot steps, feeling his disappointments, success's and failures. Each chapter presented intense quality of life and life treating situations that would test and potentially break the fiber of any man or woman. Jerrold exposes himself, his friends and associates in a bold and remarkable manner that allows you to actually feel his emotions. This book is a dead serious look at life within a segment of America, yesterday and today. The book reminds you that to many people (children and adults), needlessly, experience this and worst everyday. I recommend the book as a must read for everyone. My reason: This book provides an insight into a situation that many generations of Americans helped create. It gives motivation to those in similar situations and those that have not lived integrated into murder, drugs and abuse. Most of all, it proves, in America you can change your life.

West Dallas's Teacher's review...
As a 24 yearold 1st yr. teacher in West Dallas I have been looking for answers. I work at the Middle School across from the projects referred to in this book. I am not too far from "Fishtrap", and the gangs (boyz) have changed from Ladd's time but only by the faces of their members. Some of the most infamous being my most delightful students. My kids are not like all of the others in America. They are different...special even and Jerrold Ladd told me why. As I read this book with every page I turned I anticipated that the "story" would get better. I prayed that his mother would change. I longed for the chapter when some long lost Great-Uncle from Georgia would come and take him from the reality of his torrid life. But it never happened. And I became frustarted because my students do not have anyone to rescue them from their realities, not for the long haul at least. Jerrold Ladd's book explained to me the generational frustaration that West Dallas incorporates. The resentment and struggle of blocks and blocks of people is the only thing this community truly owns. Ladd wrote the testament and explanation of a community's fear. His hopes and fears were evident on every page of this book. I only wish that my studenrs could take time from their troubles of hunger, fear, anger, and poverty to big up this reflection of possible positive self. Thank you for this invaluable tool of living and learning.

The 1st yr. West Dallas Teacher's review...
As a 24 yearold 1st year Teacher in West Dallas I have looked for reasons as to why my students (my kids) as I call them are the way they are. I teach eighth grade History at Thomas Edison Middle Learning Center which is located across the street from the projects referred to by Mr. Ladd. I can testify that all of my 109 students are the soul of Jerrold Ladd.

I have gone home frustrated many nights, crying myself to sleep distraught over what my kids must face at home from day to day after a long day at school. Mr. Ladd brought home the realities of my student lives. He pushed their questionable futures to the forefront of my classroom and by this Christmas I was sad to see them go. I was sad because I questioned how many of them would bathe without the motivation of not being ridiculed by mean classmates. I was sad because I wondered to what length one of my kids would go to pay his mother's rent, the same mother who stood in front of me and her precious son parent-confrence night and stated how he was a waste of 13 years.

As I turned the pages of this book I waited with each page for Mr. Ladd's situation to get better. Similarly, as I come to work everyday I look for my kids situation to get better. In the final ten to twelve pages of this testament to the community of West Dallas I finally saw inspiration and hope, however I shudder to think how long it will take the children of West Dallas to see the same thing.

Jerrold Ladd thank you for this guide into the minds of my babies. It is a invaluable tool.

Ksiazka trzyma w napieciu i uroku ludzi i autorki
Ksiazka trzyma w napieciu i wraca sie do niej jak do dobrego piwa! Uczy spojrzenia na wlasne zycie z dystansem, madroscia, cieplem. W depresyjnych czasach, jakie mamy wokol siebie, uczy jakby akceptacji ludzi i swiata, dostrzegania dobra. Ksiazka wprowadza w dobry nastroj i dobre nastawienie do siebie i innych. Moze byc terapia w zlych momentach, trudnych czy kryzysowych. Niewiele jest takich ksiazek, ktore uspokajaja, a ta przemowila do mnie swoim pieknem jezyka i spojrzenia na swiat. Za jej najwieksza zalete uwazam wlasnie pozytywne wrazenia, ktore wywyoluje.

wzruszajaca, ciepla, madra ksiazka
Pisanie o sobie zawsze jest trudne, bo moze odslonic potwora, snoba, pustke i glupote. Ta ksiazka pokazuje osobe madra, myslaca, ciekawa swiata i ludzi, zyczliwa innym, kochajaca matke. Lubi innych ludzi, lubi zwierzeta.

a wonderful book!
The book is written as a part autobiography and part diary. The autobiography is a literary form, which unlike other forms, shows the "ego" ot the author. Aleksandra Ziolkowska-Boehm "ego" is delicate and fascinating! Many interesting details about life in America are shown with tact and good understanding. The book is written with talent and keeps its focus. It is diffficult to stop reading; day after day it captures the imagination. Some fragments are almost like from a movie - dialog, description and people are very realistic.

Adams V. Texas
Published in Hardcover by St. Martin's Press (June, 1991)
Authors: Randall Dale Adams, William Hoffer, and Marilyn Mona Hoffer
Average review score:

Reads like a fictional crime novel, but it's TRUE!
I can't count how many times I've watched "The Thin Blue Line" and how many times I've read this book. Like everything else I become interested in, I became OBSESSED with the Randall Adams case and wanted to know everything about it. Randall Dale Adams is - in my opinion - a living hero; I hope to meet him someday and shake his hand.

Adams' memoir (1976-1989) reads like a fictional suspense novel... it's hard to believe, but it's true! The book includes a lot of things that viewers of Errol Morris's documentary haven't seen... we see how improperly biased Judge Metcalf was, as he drives from the courthouse parking lot in the same car as the prosecutors, laughing at Adams' family as he passes them! That's appalling.

I highly recommend both this book and the documentary film "The Thin Blue Line."

Other reviewers have expressed curiousity about Randall's life after prison. Here's what I know:
At first, he was hounded by the press; they followed him everywhere. He traveled the college circuit, getting paid for telling his story. He co-wrote this book, and went on a publicity tour to support it (which took him, briefly, back to Texas). Eventually things quieted down and Randall tried to lead a normal life; he got a factory job in his native Ohio and had a brief marriage. Then a friend encouraged him to speak out against the death penalty, and he began again to publicly oppose capital punishment. During another trip to Texas to support a moratorium on the death penalty, he met an activist named Jill. Three weeks later, he moved from Ohio to (gulp!) Texas to be with her. They're now married and speaking out against the death penalty together...

An Amazing True Story
Passing through a law and order phase in my reading life I came across Adams vs. Texas and have to say it was amazing. Adams vs. Texas is the story of a semi-drifter who, a victim of circumstances, was charged with the murder he didn't do of a man he didn't know and as a result comes up against the State of Texas as a murderer and faces death in the electric chair. His contact with investigators, lawyers, judges, wardens, other convicts, the press, a painfully deluded prosecutor, and the real criminal of the case are combined to make a powerfully compelling story, spanning over twelve years of trial, imprisonment, hardship and finally; triumph. In the midst of this ugly line of events Adams believes that God has him where he is for a purpose and in the end that is true, but it's sad one man had to make such a sacrifice and wonderful that he was able to.
The fact that the events in this book really happened to a man is incredible, but they are presented in such and honest, down-to-earth manner that makes it a real tribute to the man who both went through this experience and survived, both physically and mentally to tell his story. Wherever you are, Randall Dale Adams, I'm sorry they did that to you and you deserve all the happiness in the world. As for the rest of you--go read Adams vs. Texas and remember another, much larger, sacrifice made for you over 2,000 years ago and accept and cherish His gift to you: Life--forever

A Great Story and I'm Glad It Had A Happy Ending
This is an extremely interesting book, it's all the narrative background behind the documentary film "The Thin Blue Line." I hope Adams is doing okay now. I'm certainly glad the truth was brought out, and that he was properly cleared and freed.

One point I found most interesting was Adams' sideline exploration of the fact that someone who opposes the death penalty cannot be excluded (for that reason) from the jury in a capital murder case. It seems that juries are supposed to be representative of society, and a significant portion of society DOES oppose the death penalty -- thus it is appropriate for people who think that way to be allowed to serve on a death penalty jury.

In Spite of
Published in Paperback by Well Done Books (October, 1998)
Authors: Victor McGlothin, Darren Rollinson, and Greg A. Floyd
Average review score:

"In Spite Of " Captivates
"In Spite Of" is a well-written, passionate story involving high finance, loyalties, murder, drug trafficking, and sweet romance. Victor McGlothin triumphs as an author in this drama centered around the lives of Jonathan Holloway Sr. and Jr., spanning a twenty-five-year period. "In Spite Of" paints the portrait of being Black and male in America. "In Spite Of" his contributions to this society, respect is hard earned and sometimes quickly dispelled. Jonathan Holloway Sr.'s life choices destroyed he and his family. Jonathan Jr., a bank manager, has to contend with an evil foe from the past that he's totally unaware of. A must read, can't put it down book

Great Novel From a Male Perspective!
'In Spite Of' is a great debut novel by author Victor McGlothin. It really was refreshing to read a novel written from a 'straight black male' perspective. The novel has something for everyone, if you enjoy a good book, this is a must read! I enjoyed 'In Spite Of' and I anxiously await Mr. McGlothin's next novel 'Autumn Leaves.'

An excellent look at life
Victor McGlothin details the history of Dallas through the eyes of a young man and then takes you on a thrilling ride as the main character's life unfolds. It was very interesting to read about Black Dallas in the 60s,70s and 80s. The author's style made the book a pleasure to read.
